- Hatha Yoga & Yoga Basics*
Hatha yoga refers to the general practice of yoga asanas (postures) to develop flexibility and relaxation; to encourage proper alignment of the body; and to bring balance, strength, and calmness to the practitioner. These classes focus on the basic postures and exercises, practiced one at a time with attention to building a good foundation, and balancing effort with rest. Sun salutations are often practiced as a warm-up, and standing poses may be linked one to the next, cultivating the technique of flowing from one posture to the next in a safe and conscious way. Levels 1-3.
Yoga Flow
This gently flowing class introduces the principles of vinyasa, or flow, in a safe and supportive way. The slow, graceful practice builds strength, promotes deep stretching and detoxification. This class will nurture brand new beginners and challenge experienced students. All levels.
Vinyasa flow
Vinyasa yoga is an evolving form of traditional hatha yoga that is based on teachings from various traditions, blending the heat and flow of ashtanga yoga with the precision and alignment of Iyengar yoga, and which creates profound life changes. Vinyasa, which literally means “to place in a special way,” explores dynamic sequences, linking breath to movement in a continuous flow of postures which are carefully chosen by the instructor based on the appropriate level of each class. This combination of breath, movement, and intense focus builds an internal heat that heals and revitalizes mind, body and spirit. Bring a towel or practice rug – you will sweat! Levels 2-3.
Power Flow
Designed to build strength, stamina, flexibility, and balance, power flow is performed in a heated room to safely promote deep stretching and detoxification. Note, however, that this is not a “Bikram” class. The postures will flow one into the next from a foundation of sun salutations, and the sequence will vary slightly in each class, inviting students to explore a wide range of postures. This class is appropriate for any level of practitioner. Just come with an open mind and a sense of adventure. And bring a towel and water – you will sweat! All levels.
Relax and Restore
Restorative Yoga is practiced in a quiet space using props to support you for long, luxurious stretches. Come unwind, relax and revitalize yourself through restorative practice. Visualization and other relaxation techniques will be coupled with holding fully supported poses for several minutes to reach a state of deep relaxation. All levels.
Beginners*
Recommended for students of all ages and fitness levels, this five-week workshop prepares new students to enter ongoing classes and helps more experienced students refine and deepen their practice. Participants will learn the key points of yoga history and philosophy, the basic postures and their modifications, and begin to still and focus their minds. Through conscious breathing and simple yoga postures in a safe and supportive environment, students will gain a new perspective on life and confidently begin or continue a lifetime of yoga practice.
